My favourite area in my hometown Windsor, is without a doubt Walkerville or Olde Walkerville as some still call it. Walkerville is named after Hiram Walker (July4, 1816 – January 12, 1899) an American grocer and distiller, who founded the famous distillery in Windsor, Ontario, Canada in 1858. Walkerville is also home to Windsor’s historic and beautiful,Willistead Manor, once owned and lived in by Hiram’s son and his wife. Walkerville also showcases many lovely and unique shops, rich in distinctive, architecture and full of high quality products and items.

I had the pleasure of visiting some of these shops about a month back for the “Walkerville Holiday Walkabout.”

With my camera in tow, I managed to capture just some of the abundant, ambiance and wonderful wares to be had at these, beautiful, one of a kind, stores. Below are my ”don’t miss” picks while shopping and visiting Windsor, Walkerville.

First on my list is “Ten Thousand Villages – Fair Trade Hand Crafts.”

I absolutely love this shop. It is chock full of treasures from around the world. When you purchase an item from this shop, not only are you getting a beautiful handcrafted artifact, you are also helping people in third world countries earn a living. Their product line consists of: Jewelry, Personal Accessories, Home Decor, Tabletop, Personal Care, Plant & Garden, Stationery, Baskets, Musical Instruments, Textiles, Art & Sculpture, Toys & Games. I personally fell in love with their Christmas, ornament selection, and cannot part with what I initially purchased as gifts. The staff were so friendly, helpful and informative. I thoroughly enjoyed my visit and purchases.

My next stop to shop, was at “Timeless Treasures – A Consignment Shop” where past meets present.

There were so many gorgeous, unique pieces of furniture and decor in this store to choose from. All items were in great condition and of the highest standard. Laurean Stobbs, owner of this stylish boutique has excellent taste and prices her finds, quite reasonably. All items are beautifully placed and grouped according to a theme or colour scheme. Definitely a place you should shop at again and again. I know I will be.

Once you enter the door to “Jones & Co. Vintage”, you feel as if you have traveled back in time. High end vintage clothing, nostalgic decor and lovely antiques force warm, fond memories to fill your mind and sooth your soul. You can’t help but smile when trying on a vintage hat or piece of costume jewelery. So many treasures to be found here, you best give yourself a few hours time, at least, to travel down memory lane in this definitely wonderful, one-of-a-kind store.

When you leave through the back way of Jones and Co. you find yourself at a funky, little, silk screen shop named “Saint Flamingo.” Owner of this distinctive and interactive studio is Christine Chenier. Saint Flamingo is a new and innovative shop in Walkerville offering silk screening, sewing and knitting workshops in a fun and relaxed atmosphere.

They also carry full supplies for all of their creative workshops. I love the decor and atmosphere this little shop with a big personality, offers!

The last shop on my list for the day, surrounded me with floral beauty and elegance. I had ventured into “Flowers By Design.” Owner and designer Shannon Gilbert was so friendly and helpful. Her arrangements are lush and breath-taking. There was nothing in this store I didn’t like. Simply a feast for the eyes!

Well after all the shopping and picture taking my partner in crime aka Hubby and I decided to recharge, at O’Maggio’s Kildare House across the street. This inviting pub is perfect for a pint and serves up delicious roadhouse style grub. We had the chicken wings and Irish nachos. Reasonably priced, super tasty and enjoyed in a wonderfully, warm and friendly atmosphere!

So next time you are in need of some shopping therapy, consider the wonderful shops in Walkerville. You are sure to find unique apparel, distinctive decor and fabulous food finds in charming stores with equally charming shop keepers.

The Story behind the frog:

I first created this frog out of clay when I was in high school… He was a little rougher looking back then and my family still teases me about him (he sits in a window in my parents basement) lol … My Dad tries to slip him into guests purses when they visit… He even put him in a gift bag with another present last birthday party! lol Froggie has been redeemed today .. Who’s laughing now Mom and Dad??!! LOL.. Well me actually…

I am always appreciative and a little thrilled to get a TBA(Today’s Best Award) from Zazzle! This one earned me an award on both their UK and US sites today. I do however get a bit amused at the fact that I’ve received an award for a design that I worked minutes on. On the flip side, I’m not so amused when I work days on a self proclaimed, detailed masterpiece only to be snubbed by the TBA gods. ;o) Such is life and now back to the literal, drawing board!
